AD Erupts For Historic Stat Line In 3 Quarters, Pelicans Win 110:96

NEW YORK – It was shaping up to be a virtually perfect Monday night for New Orleans. Until Anthony Davis soared to the hoop late in the third quarter on a fast break.

With Davis poised to throw down a highlight-reel dunk, New York’s Kyle O’Quinn made hard contact with the three-time All-Star from behind, sending Davis sprawling across the floor and into the first row of the baseline stands. After the play was ruled a flagrant foul-penalty 2 on O’Quinn, Davis stepped to the line and sank two free throws, giving him 40 points. However, Davis sustained a left hip injury on the play and headed to the locker room. He was listed as questionable to return, but he did not re-enter the one-sided interconference matchup, with New Orleans having built a massive lead on the scoreboard.

Davis finished with 40 points and 18 rebounds in a monster victory, his fifth-straight game with at least 20 points and 15 boards. Over the last 30 seasons, only 3 other players have recorded a streak of 5 consecutive such games – Kevin Love, Charles Barkley and Hakeem Olajuwon.

O’Quinn’s ejection took place not long after Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony also had been bounced from the game in the third quarter, after being whistled for two technical fouls during a timeout.

Behind arguably its best performance of the season – almost certainly its finest on the road – New Orleans evened its record at 1-1 on its season-long, five-game road trip to the Eastern Conference. The Pelicans will remain in the Big Apple for three more days, facing Brooklyn on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Central.

Left with little else to cheer for, New York fans began chanting “Let’s go Ba-ker!” for popular Knicks rookie Ron Baker, with the Knicks trailing 97-71 and still nine-plus minutes remaining. Much of the crowd began heading for the exits soon thereafter, as New Orleans continued to add to its advantage, going up 107-77 at one juncture on an E’Twaun Moore three-pointer.
