New York Knicks power forward Kristaps Porzingis has been on a dominant tear. The NBA responded by naming Porzingis the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
The New York Knicks entered this past week with an opportunity to make a statement. Fresh off of a stunning upset of the Cleveland Cavaliers at Quicken Loans Arena, the Knicks were aiming to not only get back to .500, but climb above it for the first time since December of 2016.
While it may be early in the 2017-18 NBA regular season, Kristaps Porzingis proved why he’s an early MVP candidate with a truly brilliant display.
New York played four games this past week, winning three in impressive fashion. That includes a 116-110 victory over Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets, a 120-107 win against Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns, and a 108-101 triumph over the Indiana Pacers.
In response to his brilliant ply in leading the Knicks to three strong wins, Porzingis has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week.
Porzingis’ gaudy averages of 33.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 3.3 blocks per game jump off the page, but the context is even more impressive.
Porzingis scored at least 37 points in each of the Knicks’ three victories. That began when he posted a then career-high 38 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and three blocks in the win over Denver—a game during which he shot 14-of-26 from the field against the likes of Jokic and Paul Millsap.
Porzingis struggled against the Houston Rockets, but he bounced back with a 37-point eruption on 13-of-22 shooting during the 120-107 victory over the Suns.
The 22-year-old capped off the best week of his NBA career by setting a new career-high with 40 points, as well as six blocks, on 15-of-24 shooting against the Pacers.
Beyond the numbers, Porzingis has proven to possess the elusive clutch gene. Between the 17 points he scored in the fourth quarter of the win over the Pacers, and the individual 8-0 run he went on in the fourth quarter of the win over Phoenix, Porzingis has been unstoppable.
Only time will tell what Porzingis will do the rest of the way, but he’s looking the part of a legitimate franchise player.
Congratulations to New York Knicks phenom and Eastern Conference Player of the Week Kristaps Porzingis!
